1.由4-甲基吡啶与甲醛反应生成4-吡啶乙醇，然后脱水而得。反应式如下：

上述工艺是国外目前工业上主要采用的工艺方法，如日本广荣化学工业公司。
向三口搪瓷反应器中加入4-甲基吡啶3720kg，多聚甲醛304kg，苯甲酸61kg，蒸馏水180kg，在常压下加热回流60h，开始时沸腾温度在105℃，结束时沸腾温度可在120℃以上。先在减压下蒸出未反应的4- 甲基吡啶，然后在13.3KPa减压下蒸出全部未反应的4- 甲基吡啶，可得粗吡啶乙醇498kg。催化剂苯甲酸在回收的甲基吡啶中，共得回收液（水、甲基吡啶、苯甲酸、甲醛）3750kg。然后添加4-甲基吡啶385kg，多聚甲醛110kg，进行第二次反应。依此进行8次反应，共得吡啶乙醇4000kg，消耗4-甲基吡啶3800kg、多聚甲醛310kg，产率95%。吡啶乙醇脱水操作工序：将40%～50%的工业氢氧化钠水溶液100kg放入三口反应釜中，加入0.1kg亚甲基蓝，升温到140～190℃，抽真空到（600～700） ×133.3Pa，开始滴加含有0.1%亚甲基蓝的吡啶乙醇，乙烯吡啶与水立即被蒸馏出来，迅速冷却到室温，并加入0.1%亚甲基蓝，加入5% （质量分数）固体工业氢氧化钠，静置24h，溶液即分为两层。上层为乙烯吡啶，加入0.1%亚甲基蓝进行减压精馏，沸点必须在50℃以下，以免产生聚合反应，向纯4-乙烯基吡啶中加入0.1%亚甲基蓝，以防聚合，可以放置一年以上，产率在80%以上。
