可从煤焦油中提取也可采用合成法制备。萘油馏分和洗油馏分经用硫酸洗涤得到的硫酸喹啉盐基溶液，用蒸气蒸吹除去中性油等杂质，再用碱或氨分解，分离出来的粗喹啉及基同系物经脱水后，用60块理论塔板的高效蒸馏塔精馏，切取基中沸程为237.5-239.5℃的馏分段，可以得到的粗喹啉；继续切取沸程为243-246℃的馏分段，作为提取异喹啉和2-甲基喹啉的原料；继续切取260-267℃的馏分段，作为提取4-甲基喹啉的原料。243-246℃的馏分以盐酸化物形态分离出2-甲基喹啉，将2-甲基喹啉盐酸化物结晶用苯洗涤，再用20%的氢氧化钠溶液将盐分解，精馏切取246.6-247.4℃馏分，可得纯度大于95%的2-甲基喹啉。由苯胺与2，3-二溴丁醛反应可合成得到2-甲基喹啉。
