【用途一】
显微分析中用作溶剂，也用作纤维素的溶剂
【用途二】
用作纤维素酯、纤维素醚、合成树脂和橡胶的溶剂及聚酯纤维的助染剂，用于配制香精
【用途三】
GB 2760—1996规定为允许使用的食用香料。主要用以配制草莓、树莓、菠萝、樱桃、香荚兰豆、坚果类、朗姆酒等香精。
【用途四】
是配制依兰、晚香玉香型的常用香料。也用于黄水仙、薰衣草、丁香及西班牙式革香香型中，与岩蔷薇制品、橡苔或树苔制品和岩兰草油共用以配香薇型，可得愉快的花香。可用于廉价的洗涤剂、不良气息掩盖剂和工业品用香精中。还广泛地用于食用香精，如草莓等。

苯甲酸甲酯制备

1.苯甲酸甲酯存在于天然的丁香油、依兰油和月下香油中，可从精油中精馏提取。工业生产由苯甲酸在硫酸存在下与甲醇进行酯化反应而制得。将苯甲酸与甲醇混合，缓缓加入浓硫酸，加热至约70℃回流4h，蒸出过量的甲醇。冷却，分出酸液，经洗涤、干燥，进行减压蒸馏，收集104-105℃（5.2kPa）馏分即为成品。收率在90%以上。

精制方法：常含有游离的苯甲酸和甲醇等杂质。精制时用碳酸氢钠或碳酸钾溶液洗涤，无水碳酸钾或硫酸钠干燥后精馏。

2.苯甲酸、甲醇放入容器中，边搅拌边慢慢加入硫酸，加热12h，进行反应：

反应结束后回收甲醇，然后进行洗涤，干燥后，进行减压蒸馏得成品。
