【用途一】
可用于生产涂料、增塑剂，也用作溶剂
【用途二】
本品用作聚合物单体，如丁甲苯橡胶和耐高温塑料。也可用以制取涂料、热熔胶、增塑剂以及合成麝香等。在日本，90%的α-甲基苯乙烯用作ABS树脂的改性剂，其余用作溶剂和有机合成的原料。

α-甲基苯乙烯制备

（1）副产回收法在异丙苯法生产苯酚和丙酮时，副产α-甲基苯乙烯，年产万吨苯酚和丙酮的装置，约副产α-甲基苯乙烯500t。（2）异丙苯催化脱氢法将异丙苯在催化剂存在下脱氢也可得到该品。但在工业中往往是将副产的α-甲基苯乙烯加氢转变为异丙苯。通常以Fe2O3为主催化剂，用Cr2O3、K2O作助催化剂。采用等温积分单一管式反应器，反应器中心设有1mm×8mm的热电偶套管，内装催化剂。反应物料和水由微量计量泵注入催化剂层，反应产物经冷却器冷却后，由分离器分离，分析油样组成气体计量后放空。影响转化率的主要因素是反应温度、空速、水油体积比。温度610-620℃；空速10-15h-1；水油体积比20-25。
