Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 1 - Product and Company Information Product NameLITHIUM CHROMATE HYDRATE, TECHNICAL GRADE 2 - Hazards Identification SPECIAL INDICATION OF HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT May cause cancer. May cause heritable genetic damage. Contact with combustible material may cause fire. Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. 3 - Composition/Information on Ingredients Product NameCAS #EC noAnnex I Index Number LITHIUM CHROMATE HYDRATENoneNoneNone FormulaLi2CrO4 · xH2O Molecular Weight 129,8800 AMU 4 - First Aid Measures AFTER INHALATION If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. AFTER EYE CONTACT Assure adequate flushing of the eyes by separating the eyelids with fingers. AFTER INGESTION If swallowed, wash out mouth with water provided person is conscious. Call a physician. 5 - Fire Fighting Measures EXTINGUISHING MEDIA Suitable: Noncombustible. Use extinguishing media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. ALDRICHwww.molbase.com SPECIAL RISKS Specific Hazard(s): Contact with other material may cause fire. Emits toxic fumes under fire conditions. SPECIAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR FIREFIGHTERS For fires involving this material, do not enter any enclosed or confined fire space without proper protective equipment. This may include self-contained breathing apparatus to protect against the hazardous effects of the normal products of combustion or oxygen deficiency 6 - Accidental Release Measures PROCEDURE(S) OF PERSONAL PRECAUTION(S) Wear self-contained breathing apparatus, rubber boots, and heavy rubber gloves. METHODS FOR CLEANING UP Sweep up, place in a bag and hold for waste disposal. Avoid raising dust. Ventilate area and wash spill site after material pickup is complete. 7 - Handling and Storage HANDLING Directions for Safe Handling: Do not breathe dust. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not use if skin is cut or scratched. Wash thoroughly after handling. STORAGE Conditions of Storage: Keep tightly closed. Keep away from combustible materials, heat, sparks, and open flame. Store in a cool dry place. 8 - Exposure Controls / Personal Protection ENGINEERING CONTROLS Use only in a chemical fume hood. Safety shower and eye bath. GENERAL HYGIENE MEASURES Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Discard contaminated shoes. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Special Protective Measures: Wear appropriate government approved respirator, chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, other protective clothing. Faceshield (8-inch minimum). 9 - Physical and Chemical Properties pH N/A BP/BP RangeN/A MP/MP RangeN/A Flash PointN/A FlammabilityN/A Autoignition TempN/A Oxidizing Properties N/A Explosive Properties N/A Explosion LimitsN/A ALDRICHwww.molbase.com Vapor PressureN/A Partition Coefficient N/A ViscosityN/A Vapor DensityN/A Saturated Vapor Conc. HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS Hazardous Decomposition Products: Nature of decomposition products not known. 11 - Toxicological Information SENSITIZATION Sensitization: May cause allergic respiratory and skin reactions SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE Large doses of lithium ion have caused dizziness and prostration, and can cause kidney damage if sodium intake is limited. Dehydration, weight loss, dermatological effects, and thyroid disturbances have been reported. Central nervous system effects that include slurred speech, blurred vision, sensory loss, ataxia, and convulsions may occur. Diarrhea, vomiting, and neuromuscular effects such as tremor, clonus, and hyperactive reflexes may occur as a result of repeated exposure to lithium ion. Inhalation of dichromate dusts can cause ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum. Contact with breaks in the skin can cause ulceration (chrome sores). Other symptoms of exposure include erosion and discoloration of the teeth, nephritis, epigastric pain (inflammation and ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract). Anemia. Stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea. Exposure can cause: ROUTE OF EXPOSURE Inhalation: Material is irritating to mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Multiple Routes: Causes eye and skin irritation. May be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin. TARGET ORGAN INFORMATION Kidneys. Lungs. Central nervous system. Blood. CHRONIC EXPOSURE - CARCINOGEN Result: Carcinogen. 12 - Ecological Information ALDRICHwww.molbase.com No data available. 13 - Disposal Considerations SUBSTANCE DISPOSAL Cautiously acidify a 3% solution or a suspension of the material to pH 2 with sulfuric acid. Gradually add a 50% excess of aqueous sodium bisulfite with stirring at room temperature. An increase in temperature indicates that a reaction is taking place. If no reaction is observed on the addition of about 10% of the sodium bisulfite solution initiate it by cautiously adding more acid. If manganese, chromium, or molybdenum are present adjust the pH of the solution to 7 and treat with sulfide to precipitate for burial as hazardous waste. Destroy excess sulfide, neutralize, and flush the solution down the drain. Observe all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. 14 - Transport Information RID/ADR UN#: 1479 Class: 5.1 PG: III Proper Shipping Name: Oxidizing solid, n.o.s.
