Thiourea is a sulfur-containing organic substance and an important raw material for the pharmaceutical industry. By condensing it with a malonate derivative, a thiobarbituric acid derivative (common name thiopental) can be obtained, which is an effective general anesthetic. It is usually used for general anesthesia after intravenous injection and is suitable for short-term surgery. Thiourea is also an important raw material for the preparation of sulfathiazole. It can be reacted with α-haloaldehyde to prepare 2-aminothiazole, and then reacted with p-aminobenzenesulfonyl chloride to obtain sulfathiazole (common name Xiaozhilong). This medicine is especially effective for the treatment of various infectious diseases.
