In addition to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, other mycobacteria can also cause disease in humans. Because of the colonies formed during culture, which are not typical of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, they are called "atypical mycobacteria", but are now more commonly referred to as "non-tuberculous mycobacteria" (NTM). Runyon (1965) classified non-tuberculous mycobacteria into four categories based on pigmentation or rapid growth during culture. After the initial report of Runyon's classification system was published, there were reports of lesions caused by NTM in the southeastern United States. The epidemiological situation of these patients is different from that of general tuberculosis patients, that is, older people, more whites, and often chronic diseases in the lungs. The existing anti-tuberculosis drugs have not been effective. To understand the incidence of NTM disease in the United States, an epidemiological study from 1981 to 1983 found that the highest incidence was Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), followed by Mycobacterium kansii and Mycobacterium fortuitum-O.coli (O. 'Brien et al., 1987). In some parts of the United States, NTM disease may be as common as tuberculosis. Human infections appear to come from mycobacteria in the environment. Leprosy is caused by infection with M. leprae. Both M. leprae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis belong to the genus Mycobacterium, and there are approximate points in morphology and response to drugs. Some anti-tuberculosis drugs can also be used for the treatment of leprosy, such as rifampicin is the main leprosy treatment, and thiourea also has a certain effect. Anti-leprosy drugs are mainly sulfone drugs.
